The AMC is delighted to announce that the First Angus McIntosh Centre Biennial Lecture, given by Professor Aditi Lahiri (Oxford) is now available for viewing on the University of Edinburgh’s Linguistics and English Language YouTube channel. The lecture took place on 10 May, 2017 and is the first in a series that will highlight some of the most prominent and exciting research in historical linguistics.
The lecture, entitled “Pertinacity of phonological nonsuches” brings together Professor Lahiri’s cutting-edge work in language change, focusing on the process of loanword adaptation. The narrative ranges from metrical stress in English, to tonal contrasts in Scandinavian, to segmental adaptation in medieval Swiss German, Bengali and English.
