About

This is the archive site for the June 2016 conference

It is with great pleasure that we announce the first AMC Symposium, to be hosted by the Angus McIntosh Centre for Historical Linguistics at the University of Edinburgh on 9-10 June 2016. We expect this to be the first of a biennial series, attracting around 70-80 international delegates. The 2016 event will focus broadly on the theme of Historical Dialectology, with no restrictions to particular languages or historical periods.

Plenary sessions

“The Middle English surveys: A retrospect and some prospects”

Professor Michael Benskin (University of Oslo)

“Middle English spellings for Old English hw-, with special reference to the ‘qu-’ type:
in celebration of LAEME, (e)LALME, LAOS and CoNE”

Dr Margaret Laing (Honorary Fellow, University of Edinburgh) and
Professor Roger Lass (Honorary Professorial Fellow, University of Edinburgh)

Prelude talk

“Angus McIntosh Remembered”

Dr Margaret A. Mackay (Honorary Fellow, University of Edinburgh)

This year’s Symposium invited submissions on the following topics in historical dialectology.

  • Theory and methods
  • Descriptive studies
  • Comparative studies
  • Language contact
  • Sociolinguistic factors
  • Building corpora and resources
  • Visualising and exploring data
  • Historical dialectology in the classroom

We particularly encouraged submissions which showcase the corpora and atlases developed at the University of Edinburgh and hosted by the AMC, i.e. eLALME, LAEME, CoNE, LAOS.
