Three events are being run by AMC members as part of the University of Edinburgh’s Innovative Learning Week:

  • Spellynge Roolz: mapping sounds to letters from the Middle Ages to the Internet Age (and beyond)

This event explores the complex and dynamic relationship between spellings and sounds in medieval English and Scots, and its influence on spelling today.  Participants with an interest in language history and change will explore electronic resources developed at Edinburgh in order to address questions of change in spellings and sounds.

Run by: Joanna Kopaczyk, Benjamin Molineaux and Daisy Smith

  • Medieval manuscripts in the University Library

The University Library holds a collection of rare and sometimes spectacular original medieval manuscripts. This is a chance to see at close quarters centuries-old manuscripts in which palaeography, art history, socio-historical context and linguistics all come together. There will also be an opportunity to see (and handle!) a facsimile of the magnificent Lindisfarne Gospels.

    Run by: Bettelou Los

  • Whit like! An introduction to learning the Scots language

Come along and learn some Scots, the distinct, indigenous language of the Scottish Lowlands and the language of hundreds of thousands of people across Scotland. There are two different follow-on events (Thursday and Friday morning), so all students and staff should attend the two 3 hour sessions on consecutive mornings. Book in advance to ensure a place.Run by: Warren Maguire and ColinWilson
